Runway 17R/35L at Malpensa Airport returns to operation
On Sunday, May 10, after 55 days of intense work and in full compliance with the planned schedule, runway 17R/35L at Malpensa Airport returned to operation.
The intervention covered an area of approximately 240,000 square meters, involving deep pavement reconstruction up to 67 cm and the complete renewal of infrastructure and plant systems.
The main works carried out include:
• new pavement layers, with approximately 100,000 tonnes of asphalt mixtures
• installation of 40,000 cubic meters of cement-treated base
• renewal of systems with around 200 km of electrical cables
• replacement of lighting with 725 new LED lights
• complete refurbishment of the rainwater drainage system, enhancing the airport’s resilience to extreme weather events.
Particular attention was paid to sustainability, with the reuse of a significant portion of materials deriving from demolitions within the new mixtures.
This intervention represents a major technological and infrastructural upgrade, contributing over time to strengthening operational reliability, service quality and the airport competitiveness.
