Milano Malpensa Cargo: over 523,000 tons handled in the first nine months of 2026

In the first nine months of 2026, Milan Malpensa handled 523,736 metric tons of cargo, maintaining a share of approximately 60% of Italy’s total air cargo traffic and reaffirming its position as the country’s leading cargo airport.

Volumes declined by 6% compared with the same period in 2025. The third quarter recorded a 6.5% decrease, a slight improvement over the second quarter (-6.9%).

Performance varied across the main segments. Belly cargo maintained its positive momentum, growing by 6.1% from January through September. The courier segment recorded a 3.2% decline, while freighter traffic saw a more pronounced decrease of 16.2%. General cargo performance was primarily affected by lower inbound e-commerce volumes, linked to tax and customs changes introduced during the year and the redistribution of cargo flows across European airports.

Belly cargo growth has benefited from the consolidation of flight frequencies on long-haul passenger services developed in previous years. New routes scheduled to launch in the coming months will offer further opportunities for cargo transportation, expanding available capacity and international connectivity for businesses.
